Natural hazards
mitigation is any action taken to permanently reduce or eliminate long-term
risks to people and their property from the effects of natural hazards: hurricanes, floods, severe storms, tornadoes, winter storms/freezes, wildfires,
heat waves/droughts, landslides, sinkholes (land subsidence), earthquakes, and dam failures. Communities can take steps to prepare and implement mitigation
measures for almost any type of hazard that may threaten its citizens,
businesses and institutions.
